  • Banco De Chile: Time for South of the Border Banking Action

    (Wed, 21 Jul 2010 12:48:04 -0400)

    Jim Van Meerten submits:

Time for a little south of the border action. If US banks aren't lending, banks in other countries are. Banco De Chile (BCH) is being added to the Barchart Van Meerten New High portfolio. The bank is principally engaged in commercial banking in Chile, providing general banking services to a diverse customer base that includes large corporations, small and mid-sized businesses and individuals.

The recent priced action of a 16.28% increase last month has given the bank a Barchart 96% short term buy...

  • 5 Latin American Stocks Paying More Than 6% Dividends

    (Tue, 04 May 2010 05:11:32 -0400)

    David Hunkar submits:

Most emerging market companies pay very low dividends or don’t pay any dividends at all. However there are stocks which pay above average yields. The following five Latin American stocks have over 5% dividend yields as of the market close yesterday. It must be noted that dividend payments from emerging market companies can be highly volatile. Tax consequences for foreign dividend income have to be considered as well before jumping into these stocks.

    1. Company: Alto Palermo (APSA)
    Current Dividend Yield: 6.92%

  • Sectorology: ETFs and Dividend Yields

    (Thu, 22 Apr 2010 11:18:49 -0400)

    roger nusbaumRoger Nusbaum submits:

Yesterday a reader left a comment asking about dividends from the new PowerShares domestic small cap sector funds. He said he needs more in the way of dividends because he is retired. I gave a quick answer that I want to expand upon today.

So it seems from the question that the reader uses ETFs and either does or is willing to build a portfolio at the sector level. This brings up one of the drawbacks of ETFs that I first brought...

  • On the Importance of Bank Yields: A Look at Foreign Bank Stocks

    (Mon, 19 Apr 2010 13:30:35 -0400)

    David Hunkar submits:

Traditionally investors have been attracted to utilities and bank stocks for their dividends and stable growth. However the past couple of years have shown that many financial stocks do not fall into that category any more.

Despite the so-called recovery, several foreign banks have not resumed paying dividends. Since dividends come out of profits, this is a better indicator of performance than most other factors. Some of the foreign banks are majority-owned by the government after they were bailed out with billions in capital infusion. Hence these banks are under restrictions to pay out dividends to investors...

  • Foreign Markets Offer Higher Dividend Yields

    (Mon, 15 Mar 2010 03:51:33 -0400)

    David Hunkar submits:

The current yield on the S&P 500 is just over 2%. Last year the yield was 2%. Many foreign markets offer higher dividend yields than the U.S. This is especially true with most developed countries.

In 1979, the S&P 500 had a 5.53% yield. But since 1990, it has steadily decreased and reached a low of 1.89% in 2007. In 2008, the yield rose to 3.11%. The current yield of just over 2% is very low. This is because many U.S. companies believe in reinvestment or...

  • Buying Opportunity: Stocks and ETFs Affected by Chile's Earthquake

    (Mon, 01 Mar 2010 12:11:54 -0500)

The huge 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Chile this weekend could have short-term effects on stocks' potential winners and losers.
    • Copper
With Chile being the world’s number one producer of copper, the industrial metal surged over 5% on Monday, as supply disruptions sent the price higher. The iPath Dow Jones Copper ETN (JJC) tracks the price of copper and the PowerShares Base Metals ETF (DBB) is composed of one-third copper along with aluminum and zinc. The move will likely be a short-term move as production gets back on line quickly; however, I do own DBB for clients and I feel that it...
