  • Big Lineup of Healthcare Stocks Crack the Russell 3000 Index

    (Wed, 01 Jul 2009 07:53:52 -0400)

    M.E. Garza submits:

It’s official, the new list of Russell 3000® stocks has been unveiled and a big lineup of healthcare sector companies who were looking to bring value to their shareholders and expose their stocks to a broader base of institutional investors have succeeded.

Certainly, speaking to the growth of the sector was the fact that nearly six times more stocks were added to the list from the BioMed/Healthcare segment of the market than were deleted.

  • 20 Bullish Stocks, 2 Detailed Trades

    (Tue, 30 Jun 2009 09:00:03 -0400)

    Marco Anthony submits:

Here is an updated list of stocks which are demonstrating strong technicals. In this list of 20 stocks there does not seem to be a specific trend among the stocks, like last week's, which were mostly from the healthcare sector.

The ratio used in the table below is the Bull to Bear ratio. This is a list of criteria I screen for to find stocks that are potential breakouts. Recently by using this method I was able to make very good trading profits by finding breakout patterns on specific stocks like Joy Global (

  • Caraco Pharma Poised for a Turnaround

    (Sat, 30 May 2009 15:12:15 -0400)

    Mike Havrilla submits:

On 5/28/09, Caraco Pharma (AMEX:CPD) reported its fiscal year 2009 (FY09) results and provided an update on the status of a recently completed FDA inspection of the Company's manufacturing facilities in Detroit, MI. Net sales for CPD declined by 4% for FY09 to a level of $337.2M (versus $350.4M for FY08). The Company cited lower sales of its manufactured products, price erosion for both manufactured + distributed generic drugs, and a voluntary product recall (of heart drug digoxin) during late FY09 for the revenue shortfall.

  • Biotech Going Generic Like Big Pharma?

    (Mon, 02 Mar 2009 16:15:30 -0500)

    Mike Havrilla submits:

Sanofi-Aventis (SNY) is now the 11th largest generic drug maker in the world following its successful acquisition of Czech generic drug company Zentiva. As $70B in brand drug patents are set to expire through 2012, big pharma companies are hedging their bets through generic drug divisions, including Pfizer (PFE) - Greenstone, Novartis (NVS) - Sandoz, and the recently announced Merck (MRK) BioVentures which will specialize in bio-generics.

Elsewhere in the industry, India-based Ranbaxy (RANBAXY.NS) lost about...

  • A 130/30 Generic Pharma Trading Strategy

    (Tue, 24 Feb 2009 03:22:07 -0500)

    Mike Havrilla submits:

The accompanying tables include 12 U.S. listed companies from the ETF Innovators Global Generic Drug Index along with eight brand name drug companies, which are ranked in descending order based on their patent expiration exposure through the end of 2011 as a percentage of total trailing 12-month revenue.

Investors who are bullish on the generic drug industry may consider implementing a 130/30 pharma trade by shorting any/all of the top seven brand drug companies by patent expiration exposure with 30% of their assets while investing 130% of assets in long positions among generic drug makers.

  • Commodities, Roll Yield and Contango

    (Mon, 31 Mar 2008 02:06:01 -0400)

    Hard Assets Investor submits:

Investing in commodities means investing in futures. And futures mean the mysteries of contango and backwardation. We cover this all the time here at HardAssetsInvestor.com, and with good reason. Rolling forward a futures contract can be a tremendous source of loss or gain for an investor, often overwhelming the returns that changes in spot price might imply.

Usually, we?re worried about contango ? the crippling headwind faced by most commodities these days, where it costs more to buy next month?s contract than it does today?s. The effect on indexes has been so pronounced that many firms...
