One nice thing about compiling the Dividend Champions list of companies that have paid higher dividends for at least 25 straight years (which can be found here) is that I get to see which companies are nearing the anniversaries of their previous dividend increases. Since most of these firms raise their payout about the same time every year, we can say with some confidence that they are likely to do so again.
Consequently, I'm expecting the following companies to announce dividend increases in the month of August. (Dates in parentheses are the Ex-Dividend Dates of...
As a reaction to the sting of the stock market decline from October 2007 to March 2009, there has been a mad rush by many investors to seek safety by investing in high yield stocks. The problem with investing in high yield stocks is that high yield almost literally means higher risk. This concept is especially true when an investor cannot differentiate between high and low quality stocks in general. What few investors realize is that stocks that generate “low” dividend yields tend to make up for it with above average price appreciation.
In a recent article, “Comparing Dividend Aristocrats to Dividend Champions,” I discussed two lists of US-based stocks that have raised their dividends for 25 years or more. Because of methodology differences, it turns out that the two lists, which sound like they should be identical, actually differ significantly. The Dividend Aristocrats list, produced by S&P, has 43 names. The Dividend Champions list, produced by the DRiP Investing Resource Center, sports 98 stocks.
Just because a company has raised its dividend annually for 25 years straight does not mean that the stock is a good bet for...
There are two lists that serve as basic source material for investors interested in long-term dividend-raisers. One is the well-known Dividend Aristocrats list published by S&P. (To get the list, click the link here, then Market Attributes, then Dividend Aristocrats. Free registration is required.) The other is the lesser-known Dividend Champions list maintained by The DRiP Investing Resource Center, a non-profit organization.
In my book, the latter list is far more useful than the former. What follows is a comparison between the two lists.
Goals: Both lists, at first glance, appear to have...
I find the business of professional investing to be very similar to the business of professional sports. In investing, the customers of a mutual fund want and deserve a competitive return on their investment for the price that they pay. ETF/Index fund guys are cheap and are willing to settle for mediocre, while others are willing to pay up for performance that hopefully exceeds mediocre but usually lags. The owner of the fund hires a manager (sometimes the...
Carlisle Companies (CSL) has, since June '07, a new CEO, Dave Roberts, who formerly ran Graco (GGG). While at GGG, he boosted ROE from an already high low ~40's to the upper ~50's, which was reflected in a substantial rise in the stock price. His stated goal is to boost revenue from $3bil to $5bil and ROE from the low teens to the mid-20's in a 5 year time frame. Success at achieving these goals should result in $8/share EPS vs. ~$2/share currently. Should inflation remain in check...
Two more dividend aristocrats raised their distributions last week, bringing the total number of raisers in the elite index to 30. This is quite impressive, given the fact that there are almost 5 more months to go before the year is out and that there are only 51 components in it.
Dover Corporation (DOV), manufactures industrial products and components, as well as provides related services and consumables in the United States and internationally, increased its quarterly dividend by 4% to 26 cents per share. Dover Corporation is a
As the market started turning back it naturally inspired many investors, traders and fortune tellers with crystal balls. I would rather not forecast where the S&P 500 is going to be in the next year or two, but I can certainly say we are almost at the end of the recessionary period. The housing market appears to be bottomed out in many markets; according to realty.org, first quarter median house value in the US is at $169,000, which I believe is a healthy price for home buyers. Though it feels bad to see your own price decline in...
