  • The Federal Government's Support Of Education And For Profits - Shorts Barking Up The Wrong Tree

    (Tue, 15 May 2012 07:05:55 -0400)

    By Bill Wolf:

Much has been made -- especially recently -- about the "bubble" in education, and specifically, the bubble in student loans. Many say that ever-rising debt to support education is reaching a climax and must collapse. See here, here and here.

We will not concern ourselves with the argument of whether it is a bubble or simply an outgrowth of unemployment and a difficult economy. Instead, we want to show that the "villians" in the industry -- the for-profit players -- are no longer driving the accumulation of student debt, and thus don't...

  • First Solar: The Best Energy Play For Investors?

    (Wed, 28 Mar 2012 18:54:13 -0400)

    By Investment Underground:

    By Matthew Smith

First Solar (FSLR) has dropped precipitously over the past year. Despite this drop, First Solar is not a particularly attractive value buy. If you want exposure to private firms which depend on government subsidies, there are better trades in the for-profit education industry. On the other hand, there are better energy plays than First Solar to be found in the traditional oil and gas industry. Valero, for example, is trading at an attractive price, even after seeing a 36.5% increase in share price over the past 12 months. The company also...

  • VIX - Options Volatility Sonar: Tuesday Recap

    (Tue, 06 Mar 2012 15:34:18 -0500)

    By Erick McKitterick:

    VIX - Market Sentiment

On Tuesday significant weakness weighed on the S&P futures which were under pressure, trading down more than 12 handles prior to the market open. European markets were down 2% across the board which were hammering futures in the U.S. all morning long. The price action initially broke both the 10-day and 20-day moving averages finding support around the 30-day moving average.

The spot CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) rose more than 15% today which one would think would be great news for volatility ETFs (VXX) and 2x volatility...

  • Rising Consumer Confidence Boosts Markets

    (Tue, 28 Feb 2012 16:32:20 -0500)

    By Brooks McFeely:

    4:04 PM, Feb 28, 2012 --

Stocks ended higher today, supported by consumer confidence rising to its best levels in a year and reversing downbeat moods following reports earlier today showing an unexpectedly large drop in durable-goods orders as well as further declines in home prices in most metropolitan areas.

A late surge carried the Dow Jones Industrial Average to a close above 13,000 after several attempts in recent days. The day-ending boomlet also lifted the S&P500 past 1,370, pushing past a technical benchmark that had stood since the start of...

  • Behavioral Finance Lessons From Magic Formula Investors

    (Sun, 26 Feb 2012 17:22:53 -0500)

    By Value Research:

In the recent column "Adding Your Two Cents May Cost You A Lot Over The Long-Term" Joel Greenblatt found that individual investors who put their own spin on the Magic Formula-selected stocks dramatically underperformed a portfolio of the entire Magic Formula list. These investors did so by picking and choosing stocks from the Magic Formula list of cheap and good stocks instead of just selecting all of them or by changing position sizing over time. Pickers and choosers lagged the default portfolio by almost 25% in the two year period between May 2009 and April...

  • VIX - Options Volatility Sonar: Friday Recap

    (Fri, 10 Feb 2012 16:41:29 -0500)

    By Erick McKitterick:

    VIX - Market Sentiment

Friday, was the first time in a long while where futures were off significantly moving into the opening bell. The S&P futures traded down more than 13 handles in the pre-market before recovering and opening around the 1335 level. Negative Europe numbers and news of a lack of a Greek deal heavily weighed on futures.

The spot CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) went north of 20 today at the open. Volatility ETFs (VXX), 2x ETF (TVIX), at the open performed very...

  • 54 'Safe' Stocks From Greenblatt's Magic Formula And Altman's Z-Score

    (Thu, 26 Jan 2012 06:44:17 -0500)

    By Value Research:

Are stocks selected using Greenblatt's "Magic Formula" also stocks which are rated as "safe", according to Altman's Z-score credit rating method? As it turns out, these two groups of stocks overlap considerably, allowing investors to purchase stocks that meet the criteria of both metrics.

    Quantitative Stock Screens

Why focus on stock selection using quantitative methods such as credit scoring or the "Magic Formula" at all?

Quantitative stock screens are easier to validate or dismiss empirically, allowing investors to replace belief with evidence for an investment strategy. They are easily tested because they employ...
