  • Trading Tips for Low Volume ETFs

    (Thu, 24 Jun 2010 04:32:12 -0400)

    Gregory Skidmore submits:

ETFs with a lower trading volume have faced a few challenges. One is the misconception that their trading volume is representative of their liquidity. A low volume ETF may have a very liquid basket or underlying holdings. Therefore, the best way to execute ETF trades varies by firm size and the size of the trade being executed.

Here is a list of tips based on our firm’s trading experience. Also included are a few suggestions I have received from IndexIQ and WisdomTree as we were building positions into their lower volume ETFs IndexIQ Tom Lydon submits:

Continued market volatility has sent investors toward the safe haven of U.S. debt. But that appeal comes at a cost – higher prices for that debt and lower yields. If you’re looking for yield now, you may have to look beyond Treasury exchange traded funds.

U.S. Treasury bond yields are still paltry. The 10-year bond gives 3.3%, while the three-month is close to nothing at 0.13%. If the markets sees more volatility in the coming weeks, those yields may become even less appealing.

  • Retirement Investing: Reach for Income or Play It Safe?

    (Mon, 15 Mar 2010 10:14:06 -0400)

Many retirees have been doubly hit by both declines in their stock portfolios and loss of yield income at the worst possible time, due to this extended period of low interest rates. If you are a retiree or are approaching retirement, how should you position your portfolio now?

On Wed. March 17, Seeking Alpha hosted an expert panel that discussed the particular challenge of producing yield now, addressing the following topics among others:

  • Battle of Bonds: Bill Miller vs. Dave Rosenberg

    (Thu, 11 Feb 2010 12:14:50 -0500)

    Tom Schumacher submits:

There are two very conflicting views over the attractiveness of bonds. In one camp you have Bill Miller of Legg Mason. He published an Op-Ed in the FT Tuesday making the case for stocks:

It’s clear that economically things are getting better, not worse. In addition to gross domestic product numbers, credit spreads have returned to some semblance of “normal”, and the bond market has seen record refinancing. Yet stocks still sell below where they sold after Lehman failed, when the world was falling apart. Even in the week after Lehman collapsed, the...

  • Tough Times for Dividend Investors

    (Tue, 07 Apr 2009 18:13:08 -0400)

richard shawRichard Shaw (QVM Group) submits:

In theory, equity income investing creates a reasonably steady and growing income stream from stock investments — a good chance of maintaining real purchasing power of the stream. That contrasts with bonds which create a more reliable, but constant income stream that has no chance of maintaining real purchasing power (inflation protected Treasuries and perhaps some variable rate bonds excepted).

In practice lately, however, the equity income theory isn’t working so well. Dividends are being cut at an historic rate, particularly among banks,...

    By Murray Coleman

Brian Orol is throwing out his old investing playbook.

  • Debating 'Fundamental Weighting' and Indexing

    (Thu, 22 May 2008 09:49:03 -0400)

    Brad DeLong submits:

Joseph Nocera reviews the bidding in the NYT - Passions Run High on Indexing:

[in] the Financial Analysts Journal... letters [section] the magazine published in its March/April issue... André Perold, a finance professor at Harvard Business School, had written an article in a previous issue criticizing a new kind of financial product called fundamentally weighted indexes, which have been devised in large part by a man named Robert D. Arnott. Mr. Arnott is the chairman of Research Affiliates, a six-year-old company that markets and licenses such funds ? and he?s also the former editor of The Financial Analysts Journal. ?André...

  • Fundamentally Weighted ETFs: Mixed Performance in '07

    (Wed, 30 Jan 2008 14:25:11 -0500)

    IndexUniverse submits:

The debate over fundamentally weighted indexes has become a common topic of discussion in indexing circles. Detractors of the theory argue that it results in indexes with a small-cap value tilt, and as of December 31, they can now point to 2007 as proof. In the year that large-cap and growth outperformed small-cap and value, fundamentally weighted indexes did not fare so well in comparison with cap-weighted indexes. In particular, dividend-weighted strategies seem to have been hit the hardest on the domestic front; the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index, for example, was down 5.16% in 2007,...
