  • Technology ETFs on the Move Following Intel Earnings

    (Wed, 14 Jul 2010 10:31:00 -0400)

    Tom Lydon submits:

Intel’s (INTC) earnings were a nice surprise for even the most bullish of analysts. Following the news, technology ETFs soared, while the broader markets went more even-tempered.

In its report, Intel said that its previous quarters had been driven by consumer spending, but in the most recent quarter, company server upgrades drove much of the growth. Sales of laptops and PCs stayed robust, as well. Second-quarter revenue for the semiconductor behemoth was up 5%.

  • Retail ETFs Sitting Near 3-Year Highs

    (Thu, 29 Apr 2010 03:21:52 -0400)

    Tom Lydon submits:

One of the largest retail ETFs is at highs not seen in nearly three years, and some of the others aren’t far off from hitting their own new highs. But the new highs don’t entirely gibe with the still-tenuous consumer picture. Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Across the board, the retail picture is looking much sunnier after a gloomy 2009 for the sector. All the way from the docks to the car dealerships to the retail showroom, retail numbers are moving in an upward direction.

  • Consumer Staples: Cheap and Undiscovered

    (Mon, 19 Apr 2010 06:31:21 -0400)

    Market Blog submits:

The sharp decline in the share price of Shoppers Drug Mart Corp. (Toronto: SC.TO) is one more reminder of what a big disappointment consumer staples have been recently.

These stocks are supposed to perform well during dismal economic times because people still want soap, cigarettes and soda even when they’re unemployed. Unfortunately, if you had bought a basket of consumer staples stocks at the recent low point for the stock market, in March, 2009, you would be looking at bittersweet returns right now.

  • ETF Strategies for the Retail Rebound

    (Fri, 09 Apr 2010 07:03:01 -0400)

    Tom Lydon submits:

March was good. Very good. Consumers shopped more than they have in several years. Sure, they’re not flinging Benjamins with abandon, but the signs of a turnaround are there. Retail ETFs come in several varieties for you to play along at home.

  • Three Key Consumer Staples ETFs

    (Mon, 05 Apr 2010 19:15:47 -0400)

    Tom Lydon submits:

Whether you have a job or not, you still need toothpaste, basic foods and toilet paper. That’s what positions the consumer staples sector to weather downturns better than most sectors. As consumers get in the habit of shopping again, consumer staples ETFs could be a good bet.

Demand for consumer staples not only tends to remain fairly elevated, but certain areas, like discount foods, liquor and tobacco, tend to even seen increased demand during slower periods. Michael Schmidt for Investopedia reports that the non-cyclical nature of this sector...

  • Can the Cocoa ETN Be Sweetened by the Easter Bunny?

    (Mon, 05 Apr 2010 11:29:49 -0400)

    Tom Lydon submits:

As Passover has passed and Easter is upon us, it’s time to splurge on some chocolate bunnies for those you love. Is the related cocoa ETN going to find a sweet surprise rally?

Claire Thomas for Huffington Post reports that the latest craze in Easter chocolates is going gourmet, from chocolate-dipped peeps to milk chocolate truffles made with aged rum and caramel ganache. High quality is in.

  • Food ETFs: Another Way to Play Emerging Markets

    (Wed, 17 Mar 2010 08:15:20 -0400)

    Tom Lydon submits:

The name brands we grew up with may soon become brands recognized by people around the world. Packaged-food companies are targeting emerging markets for their wares and food-related exchange traded funds (ETFs) could hop aboard the gravy train.

Packaged-food companies like Kraft Foods (KFT) are stepping up their presence in the emerging markets by researching which products will sell, and then marketing the products accordingly, writes Mike Hughlett for Chicago Tribune. Food companies are increasingly...

  • Five ETFs to Play the New Bargain-Hunting Retail Climate

    (Thu, 25 Feb 2010 15:53:27 -0500)

    Tom Lydon submits:

This retail landscape is not your parents’ retail landscape. Gone are the days of fierce brand loyalty and believing that higher cost means higher quality. Today’s shopper is happily snapping up store brands and always bargain-hunting. This shift means looking at your retail ETFs a little differently.

Three trends in particular are revealing themselves to be forces in the world of retail:

  • Getting Defensive with Consumer ETFs

    (Mon, 08 Feb 2010 16:29:47 -0500)

    gary gordonGary Gordon submits:

On February 8, Morningstar greeted its ETF readers with a spotlight on a “valuation attractive” segment, consumer staples. The virtues of consistent dividend returns from the likes of Procter & Gamble (PG), Coca-Cola (KO) and Wal-Mart (WMT) were discussed as well.

CNBC viewers who watch the rantings and ravings of J. Cramer have also been receiving admonishments. His concern? White House plans for the banking...

  • A Consumer Staples ETF to Play the Kraft / Cadbury Deal

    (Wed, 20 Jan 2010 08:39:51 -0500)

    Don Dion submits:

Kraft Foods’ (KFT) acquisition of Cadbury that was finally pieced together this weekend had been a developing story for some months now and has been of interest to me as I try and gauge how ETFs will be affected.Kraft gains a fair share of allocation in a few different consumer staples ETFs, but I think the best way to gain from the acquisition is with Consumer Staples SPDR (XLP).

KFT accounts for 3.8% of the holdings...
