  • Why Goldman Sachs Likes ZVUE Corporation

    (Thu, 21 Feb 2008 04:10:27 -0500)

    R.J. Chopin submits:

When a firm like Goldman Sachs buys shares of a relatively little known company like ZVUE Corporation (ZVUE), careful consideration is warranted. A quick perusal of recent institutional investors revealed that Northern Trust Corp, and Wexford Capital also reported initiating positions in ZVUE on December 31, 2007. Look a little closer and we find the CEO and co-Founder buying shares. Now the immediate question that comes to mind is, is this a pure technical play, a value driven fundamental investment, or something else? Technical indicators reveal ZVUE...

  • Handheld Entertainment Adds Ebaum?s World To Its Web Communities Portfolio

    (Tue, 07 Aug 2007 06:50:18 -0400)

Davis Freeberg submits: Last Thursday, we saw another major deal in the internet video space when Eric Bauman agreed to sell Ebaum?s World for anywhere between $17.5 - $50 million, depending on performance considerations.

The site was purchased by a small company named Handheld Entertainment (ZVUE). Handheld is a microcap company that makes a low end mp3 player. Over the last 9 months, it has had a pretty rough run in the market. After announcing the acquisition of Dorks.com for $1.5 million last November, the company saw its share price spike to...

  • HandHeld Entertainment Acquires eBaumsWorld; Investors Yawn

    (Sun, 05 Aug 2007 04:39:04 -0400)

Microcap Speculator submits: HandHeld Entertainment (ZVUE) has gone to the well one too many times. Every six months or so it announces what is said to be a transformative acquisition and tells investors that positive cash flow is just around the corner. The tactic worked wonders at first.

Now investors know better. When ZVUE announced today that it was acquiring eBaumsWorld.com, the stock barely budged and ended up closing down $0.04 to $1.78 on just slightly-above-average volume. ZVUE will pay $17.5 million, including $15.0 million in cash and $5.0 million in common...

  • Handheld Entertainment Lowers Price Of Portable Player

    (Wed, 18 Jul 2007 04:59:32 -0400)

Microcap Speculator submits: Earlier this year I doubted Handheld Entertainment (ZVUE)?s claim that it would price its next generation ZVUE 260 portable MP3/video player at $149. After all, competing flash-based players were already dropping towards the $100 price point and below, for the value end of the spectrum.

As expected, Handheld was forced to drop the retail price below $100 in its initial release today, and had to include a 1GB flash card versus the 512MB card specified in February. Can Handheld Entertainment generate profits at these price levels? I highly...

  • Handheld Entertainment: Outlook Remains Cloudy

    (Thu, 05 Jul 2007 12:32:30 -0400)

Shares of San Francisco based Handheld Entertainment Inc. (ZVUE) rose 40% Monday, purportedly due to a June 25th comment by Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton indicating that Sony Pictures will consider buying an internet company that provides "user-generated content" and has a clearly defined target group (source: Bloomberg/Handelsblatt). Investors apparently dotted the lines between Sony and Handheld; Handheld has a distribution agreement for Sony/BMG's music library and also owns a handful of user generated content sites. In doing so, investors seem to have swept under the rug the deteriorating fundamentals at...

  • HandHeld Entertainment: Too Many 'Ifs'

    (Thu, 15 Feb 2007 13:10:07 -0500)

Microcap Speculator submits: Investors were not too impressed with Handheld Entertainment's (ZVUE) conference call last week, driving the stock down over 15% in response. I wasn't impressed either.

There was some good news. The company has reduced cash burn to $400,000 per month. That's better than last fall's $750,000 but not sustainable over the long term.

Never fear. The company says it will be able to fulfill its projection of positive cash flows in Q4if it is able to sustain a price point near $149 for the upcoming 260 model, if it continues...

  • Previewing Handheld Entertainment's Earnings: Why I'm Skeptical

    (Wed, 07 Feb 2007 06:05:08 -0500)

Microcap Speculator submits: I didn't plan on updating my views on Handheld Entertainment (ZVUE) until after today's conference call, but there appears to be a lot of interest, so here goes:

In a nutshell, I'm still skeptical. I don't see a viable business model for either the hardware or content business. Yesterday's announced acquisition of Putfile does not change anything. ZVUE needs to start generating cash flow, not eyeballs.

Before listening to this conference call, I encourage everyone to read the transcript of the November call. CEO Jeff Oscodar set...

  • HandHeld Entertainment Inc.'s Lost Opportunity: Too Little, Too Late

    (Tue, 12 Dec 2006 07:01:34 -0500)

Microcap Speculator submits: HandHeld Entertainment's (ZVUE) [articles] ZP-3 and PVP-200 players are now at Wal-Mart stores according to various accounts, and are even available on Walmart.com (WMT).

That's a good step, but I still don't think the offering is competitive. WMT ZVUE Wal-Mart sells the clunky PVP-200 for $94.86 online with 128MB memory, yet for less than four dollars more it offers the sleek Creative Zen V 1GB portable video player...
