Retail stocks come under early selling pressure as Commerce Department data show U.S. retail sales fell 0.5% in June, the second straight monthly drop.
Sports apparel retailer Zumiez Inc. said Tuesday it won't be buying Canadian retailer West 49 Inc., saying it has not been able to reach an agreement over the due diligence process.

On May 28, 2010, we published a report for our clients that highlighted the companies that we suspected had the greatest EPS upside/downside in 2H 2010 (click here for report (.pdf)). This report also included some earnings analytics commentary for a number of additional retailers.
We picked 5 companies that we believed had the greatest EPS upside in 2H 2010 and 9 companies that we believed had the greatest EPS downside in 2H 2010 (see table below).
Overall, the retail sales numbers for the month of June were mixed to slightly positive. This is a good sign considering the sudden lack in consumer confidence and the increased talk of a double-dip recession. When companies such as Nordstrom (JWN) and Limited (LTD) are reporting solid numbers it backs my prediction that a double-dip recession is not likely in the US.
Good morning. The talk about town these days seems to be centered on the idea that the results from the bank stress tests in Europe (scheduled for release on July 23rd) are going to come in largely better than expected. This was at least part of the reason behind Wednesday's joyride to the upside of 275 points as traders appear to be "buying the rumor" on the European banking front.
In case this concept is new, traders often buy on the "rumor" of a specific outcome in front of a ...
Zumiez (ZUMZ) management finally provided the answer to the question we had re: the EPS impact of the company’s accounting change (click link here).
The accounting change added $0.02 to EPS in Q1 2010. Therefore, the company actually missed consensus EPS expectations in the quarter. Funny how the company (1) tried to bury the fact that it changed its accounting policy by only mentioning it on the conference call, and (2) made no mention of the EPS impact until the filing of the 10-Q.
For the last year and three months I have written a weekly piece on industry rotation that is largely based on price momentum, and described in this old piece that I wrote: A Different Look at Industry Momentum. I have my doubts about that piece around turning points and in choppy markets. I stated as much in my later piece A Different Look at Industry Momentum — II. It seems that the momentum effect has been declining over...
There’s nothing more frustrating than holding a winning position only to have a Wall Street analyst downgrade the stock and cut your profits. Subscribers to the ZachStocks Newsletter recently purchased Zumiez Inc. (ZUMZ) as it broke out to a new 52 week high, clearing a four week consolidation. The trade was profitable until Thursday...

Retailers are partying like it’s 1999 as a combination of an early Easter and warmer weather across much of the country, pent-up discretionary demand from consumers, and extremely easy comparisons to the year-ago period helped companies post their best same-store sales gains in more than a decade in March.
Preliminary results show total sales increased 11.4% from a year ago to $36.5 billion for the 30 retailers we track, while same-store sales surged 9.2% compared to a 4.7% drop last March. This is the seventh straight gain after 12 consecutive months of declines, and the best showing since March...
Wednesday was a busy day for Hot Topic (HOTT), the goth-friendly retailer. After the market closed, the company released same store sales for March, which came in at -7.5% versus the expected -11.2%. The company continues to report on a very impressive 2009 period which was boosted by massive Twilight-related sales.
On the brighter side, the Torrid division posted a same store sales increase of 9% for March and 9.7% for the quarter to date. Geared toward plus-size females aged 15-29, Torrid's 155 stores represent...
