  • Why to Avoid the Municipal Bond Market

    (Mon, 15 Mar 2010 12:09:44 -0400)

    roger nusbaumRoger Nusbaum submits:

John Spence had an article run on Marketwatch over the weekend weighing the pluses and minuses of municipal bonds and municipal bond ETFs. A few days ago, Matt Hougan wrote a favorable piece on the PowerShares Build America Bond ETF (BAB) and, over the weekend, the Barron's cover story was about the current state of the states. Mike Shedlock writes prolifically about current economic events in...

  • Retirement Investing: Reach for Income or Play It Safe?

    (Mon, 15 Mar 2010 10:14:06 -0400)

Many retirees have been doubly hit by both declines in their stock portfolios and loss of yield income at the worst possible time, due to this extended period of low interest rates. If you are a retiree or are approaching retirement, how should you position your portfolio now?

On Wed. March 17, Seeking Alpha hosted an expert panel that discussed the particular challenge of producing yield now, addressing the following topics among others:

  • Municipal Bonds: After 7 Fat Years, Are 7 Lean Years on the Way?

    (Mon, 11 Jan 2010 06:04:38 -0500)

    Joseph L. Shaefer submits:

I’m hoping, as are most readers, that the worst is behind us and we are now in a rebuilding phase. But even if that’s true, the “laissez le bon temps rouler!” (“let the good times roll!") attitude of many consumers, most real estate buyers, and all politicians means neither the federal government nor any state government put aside any money for a rainy day but, rather, spent everything that came in during the good times leaving nothing as a cushion for the bad times.

That doesn’t mean the markets must go down.Nor does it mean that some...

  • Complete List of New ETFs for 2009

    (Thu, 07 Jan 2010 08:38:40 -0500)

    Ron Rowland submits:

As mentioned in the latest ETF statistics report, 136 new US-listed exchange-traded products launched in 2009: 127 ETFs and nine ETNs. The 56 closures produced a net increase of 80 for the year.

The table below lists all 136 sorted by the first day the product was listed and available for purchase. The first trade may be a later date in some cases as a few products do not have any first-day volume. Also, the so-called “inception date” for many ETFs is typically recorded as being a day or two before...

  • 'Edgy' Award for Most Innovative ETF Issuer Goes to Van Eck

    (Mon, 21 Dec 2009 08:47:30 -0500)

    Ron Rowland submits:

With more than 900 ETFs and ETNs currently on the market, it’s getting tougher and tougher for a company to be truly innovative in this space. However, in this age of “me too” products, one company took a different path and provided investors with access to new markets.

In 2009, Van Eck Global launched seven new ETFs under the Market Vectors brand. Each and every one of them marked the first time that US investors could access these new markets and asset classes with the ease of an ETF. Additionally, the Van Eck ETFs managed...

  • An Interesting Week in the ETF World

    (Sun, 20 Sep 2009 16:07:52 -0400)

    roger nusbaumRoger Nusbaum submits:

This was an interesting week in the ETF world. In no particular order, PowerShares filed for a build America bond ETF. Build America bonds are targeted toward US infrastructure projects, are taxable municipal bonds and the yields are quite a bit higher than treasuries. Some places have quoted yields at 100 or more basis points above similar treasuries in the past but apparently that spread has since narrowed some. Barron's has written about these bonds a couple of times.

    Since it is...

tom lydonTom Lydon (ETF Trends) submits:
