  • ETFs Brace for Busy Week of Reports

    (Mon, 30 Aug 2010 10:31:16 -0400)

    Tom Lydon submits:

A busy week of economic reports has the markets and ETFs off slightly this morning. Investors are eager for clues about the economy, but nervous about what the numbers could reveal.

The ETF Dashboard shows that all major market indexes are trading lower this morning on concerns about the economic recovery:

  • Sector ETFs to Cope With Slow Consumer Spending

    (Fri, 20 Aug 2010 14:08:59 -0400)

    Tom Lydon submits:

In terms of consumer spending, it feels like 2009 all over again as shoppers clamp down on their wallets. But retail ETFs have managed to cope with the ever-changing tides.

How’s this for a bad omen? The Deloitte Consumer Spending Index tanked its hardest in July, mostly due to the anemic housing market. The index attempts to track consumer cash flow as an indicator of future consumer spending.

  • Retail ETFs: Pockets of Strength

    (Thu, 22 Jul 2010 18:23:59 -0400)

    Tom Lydon submits:

It’s no secret: the retail sector and its exchange traded funds are hurting. Blame high unemployment, a low vote of confidence in the economy and generally tepid consumer spending. But there’s still hope to be had.

There are two areas of consumer spending that are holding up relatively well: spending by those who are scaling back to the basics, and spending by those who have the means to throw around the cash. You can play both types of consumers easily with ETFs.

  • Sectors Move Out of Oversold Territory

    (Thu, 08 Jul 2010 05:09:47 -0400)

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

As shown below, yesterday's 3%+ up day for the S&P 500 has moved it and all but the Consumer Discretionary and Industrial sectors out of oversold territory for the time being.

  • Consumer Staples: Cheap and Undiscovered

    (Mon, 19 Apr 2010 06:31:21 -0400)

    Market Blog submits:

The sharp decline in the share price of Shoppers Drug Mart Corp. (Toronto: SC.TO) is one more reminder of what a big disappointment consumer staples have been recently.

These stocks are supposed to perform well during dismal economic times because people still want soap, cigarettes and soda even when they’re unemployed. Unfortunately, if you had bought a basket of consumer staples stocks at the recent low point for the stock market, in March, 2009, you would be looking at bittersweet returns right now.

  • ETF Strategies for the Retail Rebound

    (Fri, 09 Apr 2010 07:03:01 -0400)

    Tom Lydon submits:

March was good. Very good. Consumers shopped more than they have in several years. Sure, they’re not flinging Benjamins with abandon, but the signs of a turnaround are there. Retail ETFs come in several varieties for you to play along at home.

  • Three Key Consumer Staples ETFs

    (Mon, 05 Apr 2010 19:15:47 -0400)

    Tom Lydon submits:

Whether you have a job or not, you still need toothpaste, basic foods and toilet paper. That’s what positions the consumer staples sector to weather downturns better than most sectors. As consumers get in the habit of shopping again, consumer staples ETFs could be a good bet.

Demand for consumer staples not only tends to remain fairly elevated, but certain areas, like discount foods, liquor and tobacco, tend to even seen increased demand during slower periods. Michael Schmidt for Investopedia reports that the non-cyclical nature of this sector...

  • Consumer Sector Divergence

    (Fri, 12 Feb 2010 15:37:02 -0500)

    Hickey and Walters (Bespoke) submit:

Below we provide charts of the net earnings estimate revisions for the Consumer Discretionary and Consumer Staples sectors. Net earnings estimate revisions looks at the percentage of stocks in each sector receiving positive earnings revisions versus negative earnings revisions. When the reading is positive, it means more stocks are seeing earnings estimates increase than decrease, and the direction of the reading is the important thing to watch.

As shown below, there has been a big divergence between earnings revisions in the two consumer sectors recently. ...

  • Getting Defensive with Consumer ETFs

    (Mon, 08 Feb 2010 16:29:47 -0500)

    gary gordonGary Gordon submits:

On February 8, Morningstar greeted its ETF readers with a spotlight on a “valuation attractive” segment, consumer staples. The virtues of consistent dividend returns from the likes of Procter & Gamble (PG), Coca-Cola (KO) and Wal-Mart (WMT) were discussed as well.

CNBC viewers who watch the rantings and ravings of J. Cramer have also been receiving admonishments. His concern? White House plans for the banking...

  • 6 ETFs to Consider for the Recovery

    (Mon, 16 Nov 2009 05:39:02 -0500)

    Tom Lydon submits:

Despite elevated unemployment levels, the economy appears to be in recovery mode which could be beneficial for certain ETFs.. But which areas are poised to benefit the most?

Two sectors that have performed well over the past year and are poised to continue moving upward in a recovering economy are technology and consumer discretionary, according to Benzinga.com. Additionally, the transportation sector seems to have some appeal because transportation is required to move finished goods.
