Depending on how you define “active”, there are in excess of 30 such ETFs currently on the market covering all aspects of the markets from equities (PDP, CRO, XRO, PMA) to bonds (MUNI, PLK) to...
One of the hottest topics in the industry at present is the future of actively-managed ETFs. The issue is also a very divisive one; some expect that widespread adoption of active ETFs is only a matter of time, while others believe mutual funds will continue to be the vehicle of choice for those interested in active management. So far, the flows into active ETFs have been little more than a trickle, although a few funds have seen spikes in assets in recent weeks.
The steady surge in popularity of “enhanced” or “intelligent” ETFs has received far less publicity,...
While the ETF world started by focusing on tracking well known indexes such as the S&P 500, it has significantly branched out in recent years, giving investors funds tracking everything from commodity indexes to quantitative methodologies that attempt to deliver excess returns. These quant ETFs haven’t really hit it big yet, but have certainly attracted a fair amount of assets from investors who still believe in the benefits of stock analysis but are also eager to reap the benefits of the ETF structure. One interesting marriage is found in the PowerShares DWA Technical Leaders Portfolio ETF...

In the beginning of the ETF industry, there was SPY. From there, the initial wave of expansion included primarily “plain vanilla” equity funds offering exposure to widely-followed benchmarks, such as the Dow, Nasdaq, and even sector-specific indexes. But innovation and product development in the ETF world didn’t stop there. The last five years have seen ETFs expand from a closet industry to a mainstream investment option. And as the popularity of these funds has increased, so too have the available product lines. ETFs now...
This is an update we do every once in awhile that lists some of the alternative mutual funds and ETF/ETNs. Most really fail to deliver any value, but a few do a good job. I long ago gave up talking about the foreign listed hedge funds, there didn’t seem to be much interest.
We had an ETN that was going to launch with one of the top media groups in the world (which also would have gotten around the PFIC issues (which is also why...
I was sufficiently pleased by the response to my strategy-in-a-box ETFs post that it seems appropriate to launch a follow-up post to address several questions raised or implied by readers.
The biggest issues seem to revolve around the history, performance and holdings of these ETFs. It is also important to understand the nature of the index and/or strategy that the ETF seeks to replicate, as well as the timing and methodology used to rebalance the ETFs. For each of the six aforementioned strategy-in-a-box ETFs, I have therefore also included links to a profile/summary page; the...
With interest growing in actively managed ETFs, there is another category of ETFs (and ETNs) out there which I believe has been unfairly overlooked by most investors. I do not have a name for these ETFs, but rather than represent asset classes, sectors, geographies and other typical ETF constructs, they seek to replicate specific investment strategies. Until someone tags them with a better name, I am going to call them strategy-in-a-box ETFs.
Depending upon how you define the strategy-in-a-box concept, you can find various ETFs that may or may not conform to that definition, but six that...
Below is a list of ETFs currently considered 'overbought' using data from Finviz.com. In this case, overbought is defined as having an RSI (14) of over 80. Stocks and ETFs can remain overbought for extended periods of time and one can use multiple ways to define 'overbought'. However, RSI serves as a good first indicator. The theme from the list below is that preferred issues may be due for a pullback after a nice runup since March 6th (many of which have more then doubled since the 3/6 lows):
I was at dinner the other night and someone mentioned Decision Moose, so I thought I would do an update on a very simple system. I have written a lot, on World Beta, about cross market momentum in the past (i.e. asset class rotation). Some previous posts are listed at the end of this blog.
Anyway, below are some log equity curves for a simple rotation system. The same five asset classes as in my paper back...
