Lately I've been watching all the ads on TV and other places in the mass media with GM CEO Ed Whitacre strutting across the scene and bragging about how proud he is that GM paid back its TARP loans ahead of time, and with interest to boot. Nowhere did I hear a "Thank you." As a taxpayer, I loaned him the money, my taxes funded the tax credit for clunker programs and we the American consumer bought his cars.
It was not his brilliance or the hard work of his management team that turned GM around,...
Yesterday we noted that companies raising guidance have far outnumbered companies lowering guidance this earnings season. After today the spread has widened out even more.
As shown below, 28 companies that reported last night after the close and this morning before the open raised guidance. This is the highest total in one day that we can remember. And all but 5 of the 28 companies are trading higher on the day, with iRobot (IRBT) leading the way with...

General Motors (GM) filed for bankruptcy. The sun is still shining. The air is still breathable, or at least no less so than yesterday. The water is still wet. The earth is not shaking. Our economy is still capitalist (true the U.S. will get a 60% stake in GM but seriously, anybody who has trouble distinguishing between Obama on the one hand and Marx, Engels, Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Mao, etc. on the other has bigger problems than the stock market to worry about). And by the way, the beat-up minivan I’m driving is not getting any younger.
The vastly altered landscape in the automobile retail industry, including the collapse in available credit last fall, concerns over the viability of the manufacturers and now the implosion of the dealer networks for Chrysler and General Motors (GM), is creating several opportunities. While it took a while for some of my ideas that I shared in the Fall regarding taking advantage of these massive changes to play out, several of them have:
