  • The Gurus and the Little-Known Shipping Metric

    (Mon, 15 Jun 2009 04:55:13 -0400)

    John Reese submits:

Time magazine recently had a piece on “the least known key economic indicator” — the Baltic Dry Index.

The BDI, which is a measure of worldwide shipping rates, has “registered some eye-popping gains over the past month,” Time’s Jeff Israely writes. “The London-based index registered its 23rd straight daily gain on Wednesday, closing at 4,291, its highest mark since September and the longest streak of gains since July 2006.” Daily rates for large “Capesize” ships that typically carry iron ore were at $93,197 last week, Israely notes; five months ago, they were a small fraction of that,...

  • Are Shippers? High Dividend Yields Sustainable?

    (Sun, 10 May 2009 09:42:58 -0400)

    Hao Jin submits:

In 1920, people in Europe debated which country would be the next great world power. The top choices were the United States and Argentina; in 1957, an article in Foreign Affairs predicted the Soviet Union would become the dominant economic force; In the 1970s, it was Germany; in the 1980s, everyone agreed that Japan would run the world. Today looks like China /India will dominate this century. Of 1 billion people in India, less than 5 million work in manufacturing. If China is the world’s factory, India is the world’s back office. In spite of the slowdown in...

  • Baltic Dry Index Signaling a Market Bottom?

    (Tue, 06 Jan 2009 07:36:28 -0500)

    Joe Kunkle submits:

The stock market is forward looking; hence we hit the 741 level on the S&P in late November, anticipating the dismal economic numbers ranging from retail sales, jobless claims, the ISM, and GDP slowing. However, ahead of the market is the Baltic Dry Index, which is closely tied to global economic activity and was falling rapidly much before the market began to sell-off last summer. This was the indication that forced me to begin selling calls on highly valued stocks and buying puts on many of the Industrial and Commodity related names.

The group most closely tied to...

  • 3 Shippers Buoyed by Positive Movement from the Baltic

    (Tue, 16 Dec 2008 03:32:32 -0500)

    Investment U submits:

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is up over 10% to 711 in the past few weeks. It doesn’t mean much, considering it’s down over 93% for the year. In fact, if you consider this move in terms of this summer’s price high of 11,793 - it’s moved barely half a percent.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be keeping an eye on the BDI.

  • PowerShares Progressive Transport: Portfolio Diversification for Green Investors

    (Fri, 19 Sep 2008 07:57:43 -0400)

    Don Dion submits:

As oil prices put a strain on consumers, PowerShares announced the debut of its Global Progressive Transportation (PTRP), set for September 18. PTRP represents PowerShares’ response to a cost-conscious, environmentally aware set of investors, with a focus on companies that pledge to improve the energy efficiency of global transportation. With many investors reeling from financial sector woes, PTRP provides a fresh look at companies that could shape global economies in future months.

A wide range of factors pushed oil to record highs in 2008—subsequently causing investors to seek energy alternatives....
